YES, some SECONDARY Medicare supplement plans do cover acupuncture.
NO, Medicare does not cover acupuncture at our office.
Medicare has ONLY approved acupuncture performed specifically under the direct supervision of an M.D.. Our office does not have an M.D. on staff.
On July 29, 2021, U.S. Representative Judy Chu (D-California) introduced H.R. 4803, the Acupuncture for Our Seniors Act. H.R. 4803 would instruct the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to recognize qualified acupuncturists as Medicare providers. (This is still pending legislation as of AUG ’22)
COMMERCIAL INSURANCES:
YES, many commercial plans do cover acupuncture. However, coverage varies widely. We recommend you reach out to your plan first for coverage details.
